About.

Hi! I’m Trey Elder, a senior studying Math and Economics at Washington University in St. Louis. I’m a big hockey fan and my favorite team is the Washington Capitals. This past summer I started exploring data science as a career path and took some classes to learn R, SQL, and Tableau. I loved them, and wanted to create a personal project that combined my interest in data science with my passion for hockey. I started by trying to use data to answer my own hockey questions. I wanted to know if my own opinions matched what the numbers were saying. I enjoyed the sense of discovery I felt when my initial assumptions were correct, or when my exploration of the data led me to a new conclusion I hadn't considered before. I wanted to document the results of my analysis, so I started writing articles, using my calculated statistics to support my arguments. Eventually I needed somewhere to put them, so I learned HTML and CSS and built this website from scratch! Now, my goal is to keep learning new methods and tools I can use to work with data and uncover more cool stuff about hockey.
